World Suicide Prevention Day

Established in 2003, World Suicide Prevention Day aims to raise awareness about the global issue of suicide and its profound impact on individuals and communities. It also highlights the vital role educators play in supporting student mental health.

At the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB), our Catholic school environment is deeply rooted in the Gospel teachings of Jesus Christ. We strive to create a space where every student, staff member, parent/guardian, and community member feels accepted and valued. Our community is one where faith inspires hope and a sense of belonging.

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” This theme focuses on the need to transform how we perceive suicide by encouraging a shift from silence and stigma to openness, understanding, and support.

If you are experiencing significant distress and feel unable to cope, additional support from a mental health or healthcare professional may be needed. Just as with physical health, there are times when students may not feel mentally well. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department.
