HWCDSB celebrates Catholic Education Week (May 6-11, 2018)

Close to two thousand students and staff from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will gather at Cathedral High School on Monday, May 7 to kick off Catholic Education Week (May 6-11) with a 10:00 a.m. system-wide Mass celebrated by The Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, OMI, Bishop of Hamilton.

While the Eucharistic Celebration is taking place at Cathedral High School, schools will be holding a simultaneous prayer service to mark Catholic Education Week. The activity is meant to unite schools in a shared celebration of all that we are and all that we believe.

Catholic Education Week is coordinated by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) to raise awareness about the unique dimension of Catholic education in Ontario.

During Catholic Education ‘we rejoice and celebrate the distinct contributions our Catholic schools make in the hearts and homes of our students, in our community and world,” said Catholic Education Week Co-chairs Adrian De Tullio and Rocco Valeri.

“Throughout Catholic Education Week, we prayerfully reflect on the commitment and responsibility we have in proclaiming the Good News of our Lord, Jesus Christ.”

The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is “Catholic Education: Renewing the Promise.” The overall scriptural theme is taken from the book of Acts, “For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him” (Acts 2: 39).

Over the next week, a number of activities will be held at the system and school level that demonstrate how we not only renew the promise … but how we remember the promise, realize the promise within us, pray the promise, live the promise and proclaim the promise.

These activities include an opening prayer service at each school, an Intermediate Scripture Reading Event, the annual Director’s Awards of Excellence for elementary students, a week-long community food drive, as well as a variety of school-based activities.

Parents, family and community members are invited to visit our schools during this special week and join in the many activities planned to celebrate Catholic Education Week 2018.
